Knock knock knock.

Hugh Gordon mumbled as he stirred on the couch and tried to rub his eyes into clear vision.

Knock knock knock.

"Ugh."  He fell asleep... again... in front of his laptop and TV.  Combining his shopping and selling spree with the all-night Princess Quasar marathon was not such a hot idea.  At least he broke even, but he got three hours of sleep.  If that.

Knock. Knock. Knock.  "Awright, awright, awright!" he grumbled.  "Heard you the first two times.  Coming. Let me get a shirt."

And he yanked a "The Pizz" T-shirt off the kitchen table, slipped it on hurriedly, made a cursory check to see it wasn't backwards, and stumbled toward his apartment's door.  And rubbing a little dried crust out of his right eye, he peeked through the viewer hole.

And to his surprise, he saw a college/graduate age girl wearing a bright red and green jester's cap and magic girl sailor fuku with shin-high boots.

"Huh?" he grunted.  Thankful he still had his sweatpants on, and sorry he hadn't brushed his teeth, he straightened his hair up as best as he could barehanded and opened the door. "Hello?"

"Greetings, fellow citizen!" the young girl declared.  "I am Sailor Dōkeshi! Heroine of humor, protector of love, laughs, and light! Punisher of hate, humorlessness and darkness!  And I am seeking a fellow hero to whom to report to duty!"  She lowered her voice.  "I don't suppose you know where I could find..."  And she whispered it:  "...the Highway Guardian?"

It was too early before coffee for him to figure out if he should be in character for this or not.  "Uh... before I answer that... who the heck are you?  Really?"

Sailor Dōkeshi then took on a seemingly more serious tone.  "Certainly you'd know risking one's actual name, superhero or not, is risking your safety, your standing, your very soul.  Let us just say that I am aware of the Highway Guardian's exploits helping the stranded motorists on the highways and byways of this fair metropolis.  I for one was one of those unfortunates of which this fine sentinel of the turnpike came to the aid."

Hugh squinted at her, mostly in disbelief, partly to place her face.  And then it clicked.

"Hey!  You were one of those guys going to Fuku-Con!"

She lightly bopped him on the head with her jester's staff. "One of those GIRLS, thank you very kindly," she said sweetly.  And finally she broke character.  "Jenny Blake.  And you are... Hugh Gordon?"

"How the heck did you find my name and address?"

She leaned in with a mysterious smile.  "The Mystic Eyes of Mirth see all."  And she reached a hidden pouch under the sash at her waist, and pulled out a smart phone.  "That, and I coughed up a few bucks for an online service to tell me.  I thought it was worth it."

"Wow."  And Hugh grinned and broke into his heroic voice.  "Well, well done. It seems you've finally found the Highway Guardian."  Then out of character:  "Well hey, what's up with showing up in that get-up like that?"

"Well, after you got our car up and running again, I had moved here recently, and I hadn't forgotten.  So I did some searching, found what bits I could about you on the web, remembered your license plate, and learned you liked to help people on your weekends.  Well...  I thought what you did was so awesome... I want to join you and help out!"

Hugh blinked.  "Whoa.  No joke?"

"No joke.  May I come in and we can talk about it?"

"Well hey, great!  Sure, sure.  Sorry the place is a bit of a mess; I'd have cleaned up if you knew you were coming."

"Pfft.  You should've seen our host's apartment after the party."

And Hugh led the way in.
Here's a little something I decided to add to my character "canon" with the Highway Guardian:  an otaku fangirl who was so impressed by what HG did in helping her, she wants to help out, too.  So say hello to his new sidekick:  Sailor Dokeshi!

Her presence will be a factor in February's 1000 Words of Peril.

Whether this will carry over to DavidCMatthews' Dyna series remains to be seen...
